Professional Development
Developing excellent teachers, maximising pupil progress
Our Guiding Principles
We know that consistent, excellent teaching is the highest leverage tool we have to maximise the progress of our students. We believe that high quality professional development can support all our teachers to deliver such lessons and so we invest heavily in staff development. Our evidence informed approach to professional development has the following guiding principles:
- Universal: We believe that all teachers, no matter their stage of career can and should get better every week.
- Dedicated time: Significant time within the school day is allocated to support teachers in developing their practice.
- Mental models: We design and share coherent mental models to build a sophisticated schema of what makes great teaching in our schools.
- Habit focussed: We focus on building habits to ease the burden on a teacher’s working memory in the classroom.
- Deliberate practice: We use deliberate practice as a technique to embed lasting habitual change.
- Commitment: We commit to action and hold each other accountable for this change.
Our Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme
At Reach we are committed to developing all of our staff every week. We have designed a bespoke professional development programme based on the needs of our staff and school. A summary of the programme is shown below.
